Buggy was born in Brazil at November 1976. In 1998, two years before he graduated in design from UFPE, founded the first digital type foundry in northeastern of his country, Tipos do aCASO. Later, he worked as a graphic designer and art director collaborating and providing services to companies like Ford, Unilever, WalMart and Nannai Beache Resort.

Between 2003 and 2006 he was cultural director of the Professional Association of Designers from Pernmabuco, APD-PE, and manager of Visual Arts and Design Centers of Recife City. At the same time he became CEO at Fundição Design & Technology, member of Pernambuco’s IT cluster, and received post graduation degrees in Business Management at Fundação Dom Cabral. Still in 2006 he took a master’s degree in Design also at UFPE. One year later, he wrote ‘O MECOTipo’, the first book published in Brazilian Portuguese about type design.

In January 2008 he founded the Course of Technology in Graphic Design at Barros Melo College in Olinda City. He coordinated this first graphic design course offered in Pernambuco by a private institution until 2009, when he joined the staff of UFPE professors.

He also organized and participated actively in conferences, exhibitions and competitions in Brazil and abroad, having been awarded on the 7th and 9th Biennial of Graphic design from ADG-Brasil, the 2004 and 2008 Biennial Tipos Latinos, the 2nd and 3rd Pernambuco Design and 2013 International Design, Branding and Communication Prize CLAP.

Currently, he works on post graduate programs in graphic design around his country and teaches typeface design, history of typography and printing techniques at the Design Center of CAA, UFPE. His most important fonts are Cordel, Disquete, Bitmap, Oxe, Régua, AvantBuggy, Lia and Fatwood.



Nannai 1999
CLIENT: Meira Lins Group.
PROBLEM: To develop the visual identity of a unique resort in one of the most beautiful beaches in Pernambuco.
SOLUTION: Use of bungalow’s graphic synthesis to show Nannai’s atmosphere.


Nannai 2013
CLIENT: Meira Lins Group.
PROBLEM: After 14 years of use and some adjustments made by the client’s marketing team the Nannai’s visual identity needed a complete redesign.
SOLUTION: Change in the institutional color, symbol redesign and creation of a new exclusive lettering.


Barros Melo 2005
PROBLEM: To develop the visual identity of a traditional university in Olinda.
SOLUTION: Use of arches, present on the architecture of the university and on the former brand, in order to represent the integration of different kinds of people and thoughts. An exclusive lettering was created to reinforce the symbol concept.
Prized at the 3th Pernambuco Design Award.


Novo Pina 2006
CLIENT: Novo Pina Pub.
PROBLEM: To develop the visual identity of Pina de Copacabana, under new manegement and where musicians of Manguebeat Moviment used to meet.
SOLUTION: Use of Iemanja’s graphic synthesis. The symbol was revered since the foundation of the bar.


Patalu 2001
CLIENT: Patalu.
PROBLEM: To develop the visual identity of a kids’store.
SOLUTION: Creation of a lettering with rounded letters and simple lines associated to a mascot that relates to the name of the store (“pata” means female duck, in Portuguese). Use of a wide pallete of soft colours.


Trash Dance 2005
CLIENT: Trashdance.
PROBLEM: To develop the visual identity of thematic party dedicated to ‘80s pop culture.
SOLUTION: Development of a lettering inspired on ‘80s New Wave in which one could apply a range of colours and textures.

PROBLEM: To develop a graphic project for leaflets to individual customers.
SOLUTION: Enhance information through a layout that emphasizes pictures and symbols through a modern language.

CLIENT: TIM Nordeste (telecommunications company).
PROBLEM: To develop a graphic project for leaflets to legal entity customers.
SOLUTION: Striking the balance between images and text, creating a clear and objective communication without leaving aside the technological content.


Transformer 2006
CLIENT: DJ Bruno Pedrosa.
PROBLEM: Cover and booklet design for CD of remixes of songs by pop artists from Pernambuco, such as: Mundo Livre S.A., Mombojó, Eddie and Zé Neguinho do Côco.
SOLUTION: Create a transformer robot from a tin car, a popular toy on the northeast of Brazil, and make it through to the streets of t Recife through its maps.


E-lection’s Party 2003
CLIENT: DJ Cecilia Bradley.
PROBLEM: To design posters, flyers and invitations for an electronic music party.
SOLUTION: Abstract representation of the party through an allusion to the people, music and lights.


wAgenda/Diag icons 2006
CLIENT: WPD Tecnologia.
PROBLEM: To design icons for web version of the scheduling system developed by WPD for medical appointments.
SOLUTION: Use of ordinary objects and easily understood symbols. Recurrence of representations to give consistency to the communication system.


Diag Interface 2006
CLIENT: WPD Tecnologia.
PROBLEM: Convert a desktop system interface for web environment.
SOLUTION: After analysing the usability of the interface developed in Delphi, we have proposed a new logic of interaction that resulted in a new provision of information architecture and software components suitable for use in Internet.


Design is part of you / You are part of design 2008
CLIENT: Barros Melo College.
PROBLEM: To develop a set of posters for lectures sponsored by a new Graphic Design course in order to welcome students into their first week of classes.
SOLUTION: Toy Art or Folk Art? All contemporary expressions are part of this new design course. The design has many facets, and can be a refletion of people’s ideas. So, many faces were photographed at the college and were used to compose a panel that plays with switches on pictures and words in portuguese, giving the idea that design is part of you and you are also part of design.
Prized at the 9th Biennial of Graphic Design ADG-Brazil.


Expanded banner Gentefeia.com 2002
CLIENT: Gentefeia.com.
PROBLEM: To propose a brand and an expanded banner to advertise the services of a local company specialized in advertising casting for models with a non-standard figure in the media.
SOLUTION: It was developed a simple symbol for the company, taking into account its main feature, and expanded banners in which virtual models, developed by the designer, give an idea of the casting of the company.

PROBLEM: To develop a set of icons to illustrate a micro computer and telecommunications publication.
SOLUTION: Graphic synthesis of wireless and desktop devices with well-known design.

PROBLEM: To develop an illustration for communication in an event for youth members of PT in Recife without using the colors of the party.
SOLUTION: Ironic drawing of a young man with white hair in front of a star. Inspired by the work of illustrator Nate Williams.


Symbol of life 2006
CLIENT: Symbol of Life Exhibition by University Universidade-RJ.
PROBLEM: To develop an illustration able to synthesize the designer’s point of view about life.
SOLUTION: Illustration of the moment of fertilization of an egg, the beginning of human life.

CLIENT: Fundição.
PROBLEM: To develop an illustration for an advertisers and designers’ party.
SOLUTION: Drawing of two children of different races and gender.


Manguebats 2004
PROBLEM: To develop a set of icons which can be used to impress Pernambuco’s identity on products and services offered by micro and small entrepreneurs in the state.
SOLUTION: Dingbats family consisting on four fonts developed from an iconographic research on ‘90s manguebeat culture.
Prized at the 7th Biennial of Graphic Design ADG-Brazil, Tipos Latinos 2004 Type Biennial and 2nd Pernambuco Design Award.
